ISelenium is an essential trace element essential for human life mainly due to its antioxidant properties through selenoproteins such as glutathione peroxidase. Spirulina is a blue-green algae known for its nutritive, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and could be enriched in selenium during its culture. We showed that a selenium deficiency led to a sharp decrease in plasma, liver, kidney, heart and soleus selenium concentration and GPx activities while brain is fully protected. Furthermore, a sodium selenite supplementation seemed to be more efficient to improve GPx activity after a selenium deficiency whereas Selenium-enriched Spirulina allowed to restore selenium concentration in every tissues.
